…Leaders that are concerned more with their own reputation for personal greatness, often failed to set the company up for success in the next generation. After all, what better testament to your own personal greatness than that the place falls apart after you leave?

“The genius of Jobs and Apple wasn’t the product. It was the vision, the process and the people.” - Raymond Jepson
After a friend gave me a little excerpt of the Steve Job’s biography, It inspired me to write this little blog post, and hopefully enlighten some people.
I’ve seen, heard and experience time and time again, where creatives get ignored and the hard headed engineers and non-creatives win the fight over usability, design and experience of a product or website. They claim to know what people want, but only listening to what they want. The reason why Apple is so successful is because Steve Jobs listened to the designers. Not saying that all designer’s are masters of usability, but they think in a way other people don’t. Every company says they want to be like apple and they want the next ipod, but they’re not doing things within their company to nurture their creative talents.
Have you seen Google’s new site restructuring? I’m pretty annoyed with the user interface, they tried to simplify it, but made it more difficult in the process. You know why that is? The designers gave up fighting with the engineers and let them have it their way. Designers may have the ideas, but very few have the stamina to keep fighting with stubborn engineers. I’m related to an engineer and let’s just say, the product always comes out like crap when I help him design anything. He wants to change little things here and there and the whole thing becomes mush. With back and forth changes, I usually run out of creative juices to deal with them and give them whatever they want. They usually have no design background and yet they have tons of design feedback. I’m not a person to knock down any ideas, I believe everyone has good ideas, and sometimes I get great feedback from non designers, but there’s a limit.
Just to sum it all up, design is not all about making something look pretty, it also involves looking at the big picture and anticipate how a user will respond and engage with the work and designers are trained to do that through their knowledge of how people see. Bosses, watch out for the engineers or non-creatives changing your designer’s work under your nose, you may have already had the next ipod. ;)
sorry, one last thing! — good, cheap and fast.. pick two, you can’t have all three.

I’m having this great felted item kick right now and these felted rock pillows are so smart. I could picture them just scattered around the house, in a pile, or on your bed. They’re just so soothing to look at.
